No matter where you are in your sexual health journey, it may be beneficial to think about different forms of contraception. When it comes to contraception, there are a plethora of options to choose from. Intrauterine Devices (IUD) and Birth Control Implants are inserted by your healthcare provider. IUDs can be either copper or hormonal and last between 3-12 years. The Implant is a hormonal implant placed in the arm and can last up to 5 years. The birth control shot is a hormonal shot that must be given every 3 months. The birth control vaginal ring is a hormonal ring inserted by the user and replaced once a month. The birth control patch is a hormonal patch changed by the user once a week. The birth control pill is a form of hormonal contraception that must be taken around the same time daily. External and internal condoms are non-hormonal forms of contraception that are placed on the penis or inside of the vagina, respectively, and act as a barrier between you and your partner. External and internal condoms, along with dental dams which are placed on the vulva or anus prior to oral sex, are the only methods of reducing your chances of getting or spreading STIs during sex. Free condoms are available at Bailey Health Center and Gender & Sexuality Resource Center in Lower Farinon.
