I’m not the kind of person that one would describe as “athletic.” I have little interest in sports, but I do have an interest in my health. Exercise is a great component of keeping yourself healthy. I do not have enough time to dedicate myself to a sport at Lafayette, but the college provides many options for those who still want to exercise with other students. One alternative that I have found to fit my character is Zumba. Zumba is part of Lafayette’s Group Fit: Cardio and Strength classes. It incorporates Latin dancing into a fun cardio work out. The moves are simple enough to follow and the routines can be picked up easily, without any previous experience. The first Zumba class of the semester, I gathered up a group of friends to attend the class. At first, the wall-to-wall mirrors were a little intimidating. But as the music began to play and the instructor started moving, I forgot about any self-consciousness that I had and focused on mimicking the instructor and moving to the beat. Whenever I peaked a glance at my friends, their faces either showed great concentration or were covered in a huge smile. By the end of the class, every one of my friends—including myself—admitted that they loved it. I found it to be a great way to exercise; classes last one hour that seems to fly by, while one hour on a treadmill feels like an eternity for me. I was able to laugh with my friends, complete a full body work out, and listen to both modern and cultural music all at the same time. I plan to make Zumba a weekly occurrence into my schedule (homework permitting) to strengthen my body and release stress acquired throughout the week.
