Possibly the most dreaded, but also the most exciting aspect of college is the future after graduation. Even as a freshman, the idea of employment is already looming over my head. To help cope with this thought, Lafayette provides an excellent Career Services program with information and guidance for all students, no matter what year they are in. One of the resources I recently took advantage of is the Career Services “Writing Your First Resume” Workshop. A few friends and I went over to Hogg Hall one afternoon for the informational workshop, not quite sure what to expect. We are all just freshmen, so how important could a resume be? The answer: very.
I didn’t realize that you need a resume not only for job opportunities but also for internships or externships. As you start your resume, you can include activities from high school, but as you go through college you can add new achievements and remove the older information. The workshop covered all the basics for a resume, with what should and should not be included. Furthermore, it provided an example for the layout of a resume. Though I’m not looking for any permanent employment or internships as of now, I know I will have to do so eventually. This workshop gave me a good start on how to tackle the real world and I now feel much more confident and prepared, even if I am only a freshman.
